Brrrrrrr............ baby it's cold outside!

Design tips to create a warm & cozy home this winter.

Winter is currently at our door here in Colorado and like most, I’m ready to turn on the fireplace, grab my fluffy slippers, curl up on the sofa with hot chocolate and a good book.

Here are some tips that will help you create a warm and cozy home without breaking the bank:

  • Layer on the fabrics! Chunky warm throws, cozy textiles and lots of velvet will help take the chill out of the air. Add faux fur pillows on your sofa and chairs. Have a look at sites such as West Elm and Arhaus.

  • If you have high ceilings with fans, it’s time to think about reversing the direction of your ceiling fans to help push the heat down and save on your heating bill.

  • Add warm rugs with a little pile onto those wood floors - try sites such as: Overstock/Joss & Main/Homegoods or Way fair for an inexpensive and fun change to your decor. If you don’t want a large rug, try only a small wool rug by your bedside, mix is up, try layering a faux fur or cowhide.

  • Try out a new paint color to warm things up a bit - sticking with neutral colors such as creams, off whites and rustic browns to help make the space feel warm, add accessories for a bit of pop!

  • Scented candles are my go to - as well as fairy lights in jars.

  • Bring the outdoors in with succulents or an indoor terrarium. Pinecones and cinnamon sticks in bowls or a rustic container add a warm and wonderful smell.

  • Add rustic and wooden elements to your existing decor, try shopping at your local consignment store for reasonable pieces that you can possibly add only a fresh coat of paint.

  • Switch out your lightbulbs to a ‘warmer” bulb - a soft yellow color for your bedroom to ready your body to sleep - 40 watt. Look at Home Depot.

  • Try switching out your sateen sheets for a flannel to create a cozy retreat - look for a higher quality GSM (grams per square meter) they are warmer and softer. Look to sites such as: L.L. Bean, Lands End, The Company Store for great deals. Add warm colors, mix and match blankets, for a little extra splurge add a mattress topper.

  • Switch out your lighter summer curtains to something a little heavier to help with insulating the cold air from leaky windows.

  • Light your fireplace! If you don’t have one check out Way fairs wall mounted F.P. or the Metropolitan Tabletop fireplace by Anywhere Fireplace to create the perfect mood.

  • And lastly - Try essential oils for a better nights sleep - aromatherapy’s are all the rage, try a reed diffuser in Lavender or Ylang Ylang.
